The 94th Academy Awards took place this past Sunday in the bosom of Hollywood’s bedazzled playground and I barely remembered it was on, if not for my timeline being accosted with images of the rich and famous.

In my younger days when I had dreams of walking the red carpet, watching the Oscars was my favorite sport and I never missed any of the action from the beginning of celebrity arrivals to the last award of the night.

But getting older can be a bummer, along with the bad politics that dictate how and why certain projects that deserve the recognition of the Academy tend to get blatantly ignored in favor of more palatable fare that celebrates mostly white culture.

This explains why I was oblivious to what was going down the moment the slap heard around the world became the main attraction. After finishing up the season of yet another TV series, I checked my Twitter feed and was amazed by the spectacle of what was unfolding.

Will Smith, who was up for one of the big awards of the night — Best Actor for his role in the critically-acclaimed biopic — King Richard had done something so unbelievable that I’m still not convinced that this wasn’t a stunt.
