Why The Passing Of The CROWN Act Is A Bittersweet Victory

We finally have legislation that makes it a crime for racists decision-makers to punish innocent Black children and Black adults for daring to showcase their natural textures in their most beautiful state. It feels like a long overdue mandate that’s arrived just in time to add further protections for the vulnerable in this inflamed climate.

And as Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts so poignantly pointed out in response to the historic passing of the CROWN Act bill, “Black is Beautiful,” and that extends to every feature that’s been historically ridiculed and demeaned for the uniqueness that remains unmatched.

The CROWN Act stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.” For a Black woman, who “bravely” wore her “coarse” “nappy”…
