Okay, so this year didn’t pan out the way you had hoped. You really didn’t see this coming. You thought for sure that you would be spending “Turkey Day” with family and friends or at least a friend.

But as luck would have it — you are going to be all by yourself and it sucks. It sucks because everyone else around you seems to have escaped your fate.

They eagerly discuss their plans for the “big day” with you and then the dreaded moment arrives when you have to give them your equally exciting itinerary. Of course you don’t disappoint. You flat out lie about what you’re planning to do and where you’re going to do it.

As the questions pile up — your story gets even more elaborate which depresses you even more.

The truth is that spending Thanksgiving alone doesn’t have to be a pathetically imposed ritual. You can totally get over the cliche requirements assigned to a day that quite frankly can be the most stressful of the year.

For once, think outside the box and ignore the emotional pangs of social media. In fact take a much needed 24 hour break from your multiple timelines because you already know what the deal is with that frenzied situation.

You’re going to be doused with images and captions from friends who can’t wait to assure you and themselves that they are having the time of their lives. They are surrounded by family, food and booze.

Isn’t that what life is all about?

Yeah — but pictures can be deceiving and so can words. You can have way more fun than they’re having (or not) if you just get over the hump of self-pity.

Once you make it to the other side — you will finally be able to really experience the joy of your own independence. Suddenly you will be consumed with the feeling that you are invincible as it dawns on you that Thanksgiving Day can literally be everything and anything you desire.

You can wake up anytime you want to because you have no obligations. No annoying grocery runs or delegated familial duties. You can stay in bed until you can’t stand it anymore.

You can pop that bottle of wine at noon or earlier. And guess what? You can drink the whole bottle and nobody will make you feel like shit about it because there is no one around!

You can watch whatever you want without making do with the traditional fare of sports or parades. Surrender to a marathon of all your favorite shows or consider spending the day with James Bond — those films are surprisingly intoxicating. And even more so when you are slightly intoxicated.

Or maybe you want to get outside and explore. Great! Most major cities are less chaotic on Thanksgiving Day so make the most of it and roam around with glee.

Take in a movie, visit a place you’ve never been before or treat yourself to a drink and a light meal as you people watch. You may lock eyes with a gorgeous stranger from another country who has never celebrated Thanksgiving Day.

If that doesn’t happen, and you find yourself walking by a makeshift volunteer post — challenge yourself to inquire about how you can be useful. They will need you right away most likely. This will be the best way to spend the rest of the day if you are so inclined.

End the night — capturing how you made it through an experience that for most Americans would be inconceivable but for you — Thankfully it Rocked!
