I think “being the best player” has to do with spirit of the game and the person who honors that spirit with their skills and temperament.

The point of my piece to highlight how awesome Serena is and how she has been tested throughout her career particularly by those who devalue her based on their biases.

Also, she hasn’t played against any of the competitors that McEnroe compared her to so there’s that.

She has had to endure the kind of verbal and emotional abuse that none of her White counterparts can relate to and that is why I will always defend her at the expense of being labeled “a racist” myself — which is an insult I don’t mind bearing.
