I think about race because I know that when ethnic names show up — the instinct is to automatically lapse into confusion. But when names that are even more complicated but acceptable are posed — there is no instinct to turn a deaf ear.

I still can’t pronounce or spell Schwarzenegger without consulting Google. But most Americans can do it without blinking.

I don’t think this was an act of racism. I just can’t help but think about it because of how many times my name which is relatively easy to spell has been mangled.
