I don’t think it’s exploitative for Tracee Ellis Ross to create a line of hair products that she vouches will be beneficial for hair types that are usually described as “hard to manage” because of tightly coiled strands.
But the truth is that Ellis Ross is biracial, and her hair texture is the desirable mascot for the natural hair movement, and so it will be interesting to observe whether or not her products will be ideal for hair types that resemble mine, because popular brands like Miss Jessie’s, Carol’s Daughter, etc have been disastrous for my strands.
We need to be tolerant of all hair types and not focus all our attention on “curl definition,” and how that missing feature automatically translates to “unkempt hair” that needs to be fixed.
