Her career is stellar. My point is that I that I don’t find the way she initiated it all that impressive. And it all comes down to choices and whether or not as a writer of color — I could tolerate not having my main character reflect who I am in the most basic sense. Especially since actresses of color desperately needed those breaks back then — and still now.

I find that interesting and I’m curious to know what others think — when they look back to those early days.
