For World Mental Health Day, Find Your Peace

World Mental Health Day is the perfect opportunity to put emphasis on the urgent need for inner peace and the desire to not allow the past to continue to devour the present and precious tomorrows that are not guaranteed.

It’s interesting to note how this annual event supposedly encompasses all citizens of the “world,” but the harsh reality proves how the active conversations around mental health and the debilitating chronic illnesses that accompany longtime sufferers, is still considered too taboo to tackle, particularly in Black African cultures.

Growing up in a fundamentally Christian household in Nigeria, that followed the statutes of The Church of England with Pentecostal vibes that required the compulsory homage to the holy spirit, it was understood that Almighty God is the problem-solver who can deliver the miracle cure for any ailment.

Of course, now that I’ve been a fully grown adult for quite some time, I am capable of distancing myself from the harmfully archaic aspects of organized religion, by doing the lifelong work of self-discovery and the meaningful exploration of what it truly means to reclaim spiritual currency, without the interference of man-made conflicts that are rooted in greed and bigotry.
